Design, creating a game is (not) child’s play

A sector in considerable expansion that requires specific skills and knowledge.

It may sound strange, yet there are parallels between interior design and gaming design. The latter is a sector that is expanding considerably and requires specific skills and knowledge. With a pinch of art and a lot of mathematics.
Create spaces that are functional but also aesthetically pleasing and engaging. If you start from this goal, you already understand that there are no major differences between the interior design and that of gaming. In fact, both aim to create spaces tailored to those who live in them or those who, at this point, use them.
“In both cases you need to know how to mix elements such as color and light, space and texture, putting the user or inhabitant experience at the center – explain the experts of Gaming Report, a site specializing in the online gaming sector – because if in traditional design the goal is to design functional, welcoming and personal spaces, in that of video games the goal is to create virtual interfaces that are easy to understand, intuitive and accessible, but also engaging”.

Discovering game design
To delve into the world of video game design we can mention a name, that of Tim Schafer. American, born in 1967, he is one of the most famous designs in the world, thanks to his collaboration with LucasArts and the creation of the first two chapters of the Monkey Island series. Over 20 video games in the catalog, where he has worked in various capacities: programmer, project leader, designer, screenwriter, creative director.
“I’ve always been struck by how, once you’re on the other side and you’re inside the world of video games, there are so many jobs that you didn’t know existed when you were a kid – explained the designer in this interview – such as the sound editor, the dialogue manager, the producer or even the programmer who takes care of the instruments”.

Focus on environments and atmosphere
For both interior and gaming design, it’s crucial to create a specific atmosphere. “Let’s think about how important this aspect is in the success of a video game, an online slot, a platform – continue from Gaming Report – the virtual and immersive worlds that video games offer, in fact, must follow the adventures, the emotions, the moments of the player and the protagonist”. Dark themes and shadows for horror games, precision and detail in historical or strategy video games, relaxing or energizing spaces depending on the story being told.
How do you do all this? What are the specific skills? Like “traditional” interior design, game design must also have some special skills. The complementary knowledge to be put into practice is that of visualization, i.e. the ability to understand the project on paper and then transfer it to a computer screen; analysis, which makes it possible to examine other games and identify effective solutions and errors; finally UX Design and Graphic, which allow the designer to create prototypes and models.
“A constantly evolving world that changes shape following the changes in gaming” conclude from Gaming Report. Changes that must then be put down in black and white by the world of design.
