“IN VOLO”: the latest effort by the artist Daniele Basso

An exhibition curated by Matteo Graniti directed by Alberto Bartalini to rediscover the spiritual side of man

A summer full of activities and full of enthusiasm is what lies ahead for the artist/sculptor Daniele Basso. A calendar full of events that opened on Friday 5 July 2019 with the public inauguration of ArtInsolite 2019, the art exhibition curated by Carlo Alberto Arzelà directed by Alberto Bartalini, which for years has animated the summer in the wonderful village of Lajatico (PI), where the exhibition “IN VOLO” by the artist from Biella was staged as the first stage, curated by Matteo Graniti.

An exhibition in which dreams, expectations and fears, but also symbols, ideas and projects stimulate new points of view and reflections in the “habitual consciousness”.

Monumental works such as AUREO (Museum of Sign and Writing in Turin); COKE ITS ME (100th year of the Coca-Cola Contour bottle), and GIGANT (30th year of the Ski World Cup Alta Badia – Dolomites), intersect with the artist’s most intimate production, in white bronze and cobalt resin, including the sculptures: BIMBO, which invites us to rediscover our childhood dreams; MATERNITY which investigates the transition from child to parent; ACHILL which invites us to privilege the important things over the urgent ones; up to the MASKS OF LIFE project, in which the mask loses the negative meaning of deception alone, goes beyond the protective function, to become a projection of oneself and affirmation of one’s identity.

From the halls of the Palazzo Comunale we then move on to the square of the Tuscan village, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where we find the works IKAROS and BOOGEYMAN (respectively in steel and steel and corten, both 340 cm high) who face each other in the epic clash between the desire to fly and the fear of doing so: it is when we know our fears and decide to overcome them – says Basso – that we can access a higher level of “conscious consciousness” tag.

Finally, on the stage of the Teatro del Silenzio, on 25 and 27 July 2019, the monumental winged man entitled GABRIEL. Over fifteen meters high, 350 faces of mirrored steel, 597 edges, 207 linear meters of welding. These are the impressive numbers that characterize the work – entirely handmade in collaboration with Laseryacht – which celebrates the universal value of freedom: “We are free to choose and fly beyond all limits,” says Basso.

A work that will be the symbol and the scenography of the concert-event entitled “WINGS OF FREEDOM”. The absolute protagonist of the show, Maestro Andrea Bocelli, host and honorary president of this event that has no equal in the world, and which this year will see him perform with his son Matteo together with Mika on July 25, returned to the music scene with the single Ice Cream, and on July 27 with Dua Lipa, winner of two Grammy Awards in 2019, both special guests of the evenings.

The direction of the fourteenth edition of the Teatro del Silenzio will be signed by Luca Tommassini, former choreographer of The X Factor and collaborator of Madonna and Michael Jackson together with the artistic direction of Alberto Bartalini and the organization and production of CitySound & Events.

A real exhibition itinerary, the one conceived by the artist Daniele Basso in the exhibition “IN VOLO”, consisting of about twenty works, in steel and bronze, of small, medium and very large dimensions with the aim of giving an experience of spiritual elevation through art, offering the visitor multiple food for thought in the hope of stimulating in him an increasingly aware individual and collective identity.

In a crescendo of tension, the sculptures of the artist from Biella focus on the spiritual dimension of man and accompany the visitor through three increasingly higher stages of consciousness. From a formal point of view, some of the cornerstones of his research can be found: the mirrored surfaces, which make everyone the protagonists of the work and its message, and the folds, the physical expression of change, the only true constant of life, a metaphor for the complexity of reality.

Three stages for three increasingly higher stages of consciousness through intuitive symbols towards a more conscious individual and collective identity.

For the occasion, a monograph will also be published in Italian and English, with texts by curators Matteo Graniti and Allegra Santini and images of the exhibition itinerary and site-specific works created for the Teatro del Silenzio and for the “ArtiInsolite 2019” exhibition.

To complete the “IN VOLO” project in Lajatico, Forte dei Marmi dedicates to Daniele Basso, from 9 August to 8 September 2019, a further anthological exhibition entitled “OLTRE VERSO”, directed by Alberto Bartalini and curated by Allegra Santini, which exhibits a nucleus of about forty works in the famous Fortino. Among these, the monumental sculpture MAN OF STEEL stands out, created specifically for the occasion and installed at the intersection of Via Carducci with Via Vittorio Veneto, adjacent to Piazza Marconi in the center of the Versilia town. “OLTRE VERSO” marks the strengthening of the union and dialogue between Lajatico, Teatro del Silenzio and Forte dei Marmi, places dear to Maestro Bocelli.
