On the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day, a single work that metaphorically tells the deepest sense of man’s bestial nature
This year, the Civic Library of Biella will host the ninth edition of “Biella for Holocaust Remembrance Day”, an event organized by the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Biella in collaboration with the Evangelical Church of Reconciliation of Biella.
From tomorrow until February 5, the work “In Fila Per Uno” by the Biellese artist Daniele Basso, accompanied by an evocative installation created with images kindly granted by the Foundation Center for Contemporary Jewish Documentation (CDEC), will be placed on the ground floor of the Library in Piazza Curiel.
During the opening evening there will be a short debate moderated by Silvano Esposito, journalist of “Il Biellese”, where Massimiliano Gaggino, Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Biella, His Excellency Roberto Farinella, Bishop of the Diocese of Biella, accompanied by the artist Daniele Basso and Alberto Antonello, pastor of the Evangelical Church of Reconciliation in Biella and creator and organizer of the event since 2010.
“This year a single work at the center of the reflections on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day. A single gesture that metaphorically tells the deepest sense of man’s bestial nature. All potential victims and perpetrators, we must go beyond superficiality and indifference, to the meaning of our every daily gesture”.
Inspired by the words of Senator Liliana Segre, a victim of Nazi-fascism, the work “In Fila per Uno” aims to shake consciences and push us to reflect on the concepts of good and evil, which sometimes seem to overlap, confusing victims and perpetrators. A metaphor for Humanity that gets angry “neatly in line” before the journey beyond the imaginable, towards the extermination camps. A visible and invisible symbol that points straight into the consciousness of each of us. Beyond the indifference of time. To remind us to always choose responsibly. For whenever we choose lightly, we actually let others choose, thus losing our right and duty to freedom.
“In Fila per Uno” was presented, for the first time, at the Shoah Memorial in Milan on the occasion of the exhibition “Future Memories 4.0 – what’s at the end of the track” curated by Ermanno Tedeschi.
