The summer season has finally, and hopefully definitively, arrived. So it’s time to go back to the garden to cut the grass, trim the hedges, remove the weeds and… Renovate spaces? The situation in which we have been in for over a year has led Italians to live more consistently in outdoor spaces, preferring those they own, learning to enjoy their garden with their friends even those who were not used to doing so.
But if last year almost last-minute solutions were preferred, for 2021 there is more time and awareness to give a different meaning to one’s green space, making it the living room of the summer for oneself and one’s loved ones. So let’s see what the trends are for this season.
New trends
In the panorama of trends for the garden we have identified some trends, first of all the concept of forest garden, a sort of return to nature inevitably driven by the current currents that preach greater attention to the climate. But what does it consist of? The forest garden focuses on a mix of native species inserted in a context in which they are integrated with other non-local plants that compensate for them not only from an aesthetic point of view, but also for the purposes of sound and carbon dioxide absorption. A mere apparent wild setting that actually hides careful planning that allows you to achieve an effect of total immersion in nature literally at home.
Thanks to the forest garden, an environment is also created that is attractive to animal species, and here comes a second trend, namely the bird garden. In other words, home bird watching, to be encouraged with the adoption of plants particularly appreciated by some species of birds, such as hawthorn, currant, rowan, but also the classic aromatic plants. It seems trivial, but in reality attention to detail is needed to create a balanced garden that does not require human action to eradicate unwelcome species or parasites.
More generally, the approach that is becoming dominant is the one that pays attention to sustainability and functionality, exploiting what we have and recycling what we may have eliminated or replaced in the past. There is also a lot of attention to functionality and practicality, preferring garden tables and sets that are easy to store and modular if necessary.
Style and materials
Once you have established the trends, what are the most fashionable styles, materials and shades for the 2021 summer? First of all, a minimalist style, which is inevitably linked to the principles of sustainability mentioned earlier. But not only that, those who do not want to limit themselves to essential elements and shapes can think of opting for a more exotic approach, perhaps keeping the base note of the forest garden.
As far as materials are concerned, we remain in the field of eco-sustainability with wood (including reclaimed wood!), but also wicker and willow vine. Also this year, outdoor furniture created from pellets remains a viable option, although it is always recommended to treat it to make it impermeable to atmospheric agents. Those looking for the new can still remain eco-friendly by opting for products, for example some vidaxl chairs, in recovered material such as teak. On the other hand, for fabrics, it is, predictably, hemp that contests the classic use of cotton and linen.
Ultimately, everyone should have their own personal touch, if only because gardens are not all the same, but neither are the pockets…
