The choice of shutters, between aesthetics, resistance and safety

Let's find out how to choose shutters and what are the factors that allow us to make a "tailor-made" purchase

Thanks to technology and the study of materials, the choice of shutters is now quite vast: we can opt for PVC, wood or aluminum shutters, depending on what we need.
There are also various types of opening systems, including hinged, folding, sliding, channeled or armoured. Each has its own characteristics: for example, there are many reasons to choose modern sliding shutters for exteriors, as they are very resistant from a mechanical point of view, therefore suitable for even large windows.
Let’s find out how to choose shutters and what are the factors that allow us to make a “tailor-made” purchase.

Types of shutters
The choice inevitably begins with an in-depth analysis of the main types, i.e. materials and opening systems. We emphasize, however, that there are many factors that should not be underestimated (such as the climate of the place where you live). Often, there is a need to rely on experts in the field to understand which model to invest in.

Materials
Let’s start with the materials, as they make the difference for many characteristics: wood is perhaps among the most chosen, classic finish, with the advantage of adapting particularly easily to the styles of numerous buildings.
The timeless elegance of wood, especially in the essences of pine or mahogany, is unbeatable. But maintenance is rather demanding, since it must be subjected to specific treatments.
Let’s move on to aluminum, which in recent years has been experiencing its moment: it is characterized by its lightness and resistance, as well as the fact that it does not require special maintenance.
PVC shutters are also very popular (especially for the quality/price ratio), while steel or iron shutters are less and less chosen.

Opening systems
Let’s now move on to another feature of shutters, namely the opening systems. As anticipated, there are several. The most common are undoubtedly hinged, with one or more leaves that open to the outside of the building.
Then there are the folding shutters, which have a series of hinges, and the sliding ones, which instead have two doors that slide on the guides (to be placed on the external wall), as opposed to the channeled ones, which instead slide inside the wall.
Finally, another choice that has been widely used in recent years is the armored shutter, for those who only want maximum protection.

One choice, many factors
Now that we have seen the materials and opening systems, it is important to focus on some aspects: for example, are there landscape or historical constraints? Are there any condominium rules to follow? In the absence of particular guidelines, it is possible to be guided by one’s own aesthetic taste, but not only.
There must be an openness that also satisfies the need for security itself. Let’s take the case of villas: in this case there is an absolute need to lean towards a solution that keeps people safe at home.
This is why personal taste is useful, of course, to choose colors, finishes, general style , but it is not the only criterion to be examined. The advice is to seek advice from experts in the field, so that you are sure of your purchase.
