Florence is preparing to welcome the fifteenth edition of the Florence Biennale, the prestigious international exhibition of contemporary art and design, scheduled from 18 to 26 October 2025 at the Fortezza da Basso. With a unique format in the panorama of international biennials, the event focuses on artists and designers, absolute protagonists carefully selected by a curatorial committee to ensure an authentic and inclusive representation of the global creative scene.
The theme chosen for this year is deeply evocative: “The Sublime Essence of Light and Darkness. Concepts of Dualism and Unity in Contemporary Art and Design”. A conceptual journey that explores the contrast and symbiosis between light and dark, a recurring theme in art, philosophy and science, interpreted by hundreds of artists from over 80 countries.
A film lifetime achievement award: Tim Burton protagonist
The flagship of the 2025 edition will be the awarding of the “Lorenzo il Magnifico” International Lifetime Achievement Award to Tim Burton, world-famous director and artist, who will be awarded on Tuesday 21 October in attendance. Famous for his gothic and visionary imagery, Burton enthusiastically welcomed the award, declaring:
“I am very honored to be the new recipient of the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Lifetime Achievement Award, joining the list of extraordinary artists awarded in the past. This recognition also gives me the chance to create an exhibition in Florence for the Biennale and I look forward to exploring this year’s theme of dualism and unity through my art.”
Its presence promises to be one of the most anticipated events, in an edition that will see the participation of over 600 artists and 1,500 works including painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, performance, design and much more.
Awards, categories and news
In addition to the famous award to Tim Burton, the Biennale provides for the awarding of numerous awards including:
– “Lorenzo il Magnifico” Award for artistic categories
– “Leonardo da Vinci” Award for design
– Lifetime achievement and President awards for distinguished merits in the artistic and design scene
The categories are divided into areas ranging from ceramic art to game design, underlining the interdisciplinary vocation of the event.
An independent platform for global dialogue on art
Since 1997, the Florence Biennale has been a crossroads of cultures, ideas and experimentations, founded by Pasquale and Piero Celona, today directed by Jacopo Celona with the curatorship of Giovanni Cordoni. Each edition becomes an open laboratory, enriched by conferences, performances, thematic exhibitions and workshops, encouraging direct contact between artists, critics, collectors and the public.
