The exhibition represents a new chapter in the artist's research, who has been engaged for years in the reinterpretation of the Western imagination through the visual language of contemporary Japanese culture.
The exhibition offers an immersive journey into Tomoko Nagao's creative universe, characterized by bright colors, cultural contaminations and a strong narrative component. Through paintings, watercolors and sculptures, the artist builds a path that blends the European iconographic tradition with the immediate language of contemporary communication, inspired by the aesthetics of manga, neo-pop and global visual culture.
At the center of Tomoko Nagao's research is in fact the concept of Micro-Pop, an artistic language that uses commercial symbols, iconic characters and references to mass culture to reinterpret the great masterpieces of Western art history. The works exhibited in "Masterpieces Reinvented" transform classic images into surreal and layered scenarios, in which Renaissance elements, international brands, Japanese anime and references to consumer society coexist.
The apparent aesthetic lightness of the works actually hides a critical reflection on the present. Through the introduction of commercial brands and advertising icons within compositions inspired by classical painting, Tomoko Nagao creates a deliberately ironic visual dissonance, capable of questioning the public on the relationship between consumption, identity and cultural production. His art constantly moves between satire and fascination, transforming the language of advertising into a tool of social analysis.
One of the most interesting aspects of the exhibition concerns the artist's ability to use the contemporary visual code with the immediacy of a Japanese ideogram. The images are accessible and seductive, but at the same time rich in hidden meanings and complex cultural references. In this balance between surface and depth one of the distinctive features of Tomoko Nagao's poetics can be recognized.
Alongside the pop and ironic component, the exhibition also addresses a more intimate and recent theme of the artist's production: the relationship between human beings and nature. This dialogue is told through delicate watercolors on paper, characterized by fluid lines and festive colors, and through a series of sculptures that evoke small animated presences. In these works, the link with the animist tradition of Shinto emerges, a religion in which Tomoko Nagao grew up and which considers every natural element a bearer of spiritual energy.
With "Masterpieces Reinvented", Lagobava Palazzo Pironi therefore offers the public the opportunity to get in touch with one of the most original voices on the international contemporary art scene. An exhibition that combines contemporary art, pop culture and Japanese tradition, inviting the viewer to reflect on the way in which images influence the perception of the present.

About Tomoko Nagao
Born in Nagoya in 1976, Tomoko Nagao has lived and worked in Milan since 2006. After training in Japan at the Bsemi Schooling System in Yokohama, he moved to London, where he obtained a Master's degree in Fine Art at Chelsea College Art & Design in 2003. Since the beginning, his research has been distinguished by his interest in the language of popular culture and contemporary visual communication.
During his career he has obtained important international awards. After winning the Canon Prize in Tokyo in 1999 with a photographic work, since 2006 he has devoted himself mainly to painting and sculpture, developing a personal interpretation of Japanese neo-pop. Among the most significant stages of his career is his participation in the international exhibition "Botticelli Reimagined", organized by the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin and subsequently hosted at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2016.
In recent years the artist has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions between Italy and Asia, consolidating his role in the international contemporary art scene. In 2024, he presented the "Kawaii Art History" exhibition in Taiwan, as well as creating a large public art work for the Taipei Dome. Among the best-known urban interventions there are also the monumental installations created for the Alberto Sordi Gallery in Rome and the large artistic inflatable presented at the Franciacorta Village.

INFO/PHOTO COURTESY: Tomoko Nagao
66191,66193
["GET
