La Biennale di Venezia – 59. International Art Exhibition

It is open to the public from Saturday 23 April to Sunday 27 November 2022 in Venice, at the Giardini and the Arsenale, the 59. International Art Exhibition entitled “The Milk of Dreams”, curated by Cecilia Alemani, organized by the Venice Biennale chaired by Roberto Cicutto

The exhibition “The Milk of Dreams” is divided into the spaces of the Central Pavilion at the Giardini and those of the Corderie, the Artillery and in the outdoor spaces of the Gaggiandre and the Garden of the Virgins in the Arsenale complex. It includes 213 artists from 58 countries (26 Italians). For the first time in the more than 127-year history of the Venetian institution, the Biennale includes a preponderant majority of female artists and non-binary people.

The exhibition presents contemporary works and 80 new productions conceived specifically for the Art Biennale, in dialogue with historical works dating from the nineteenth century to the present day for a total of 1,433 works and objects on display.

COUNTRIES
The Exhibition is flanked by 80 National Participations in the historic Pavilions at the Giardini, the Arsenale and in the historic center of Venice. There are 5 countries present for the first time at the Art Biennale: the Republic of Cameroon, Namibia, Nepal, the Sultanate of Oman and Uganda. The Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Uz ekistan are participating for the first time with their own pavilion. The Italian Pavilion at the Tese delle Vergini in the Arsenale, supported and promoted by the Ministry of Culture, Directorate General for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Peripheries. Title of the exhibition: History of the night and destiny of comets, curated by Eugenio Viola, a work by Gian Maria Tosatti.

UKRAINE SQUARE
In order to give a voice to the artists and artistic community of Ukraine and express solidarity with its population in the aftermath of the invasion by the Russian government, La Biennale di Venezia presents Piazza Ucraina, a place of debate and dialogue, curated by Borys Filonenko, Lizaveta German, Maria Lanko, Curators of the Ukraine Pavilion. Built in the context of the 59. International Art Exhibition, with the collaboration of the Ukrainian Emergency Art Fund (UEAF) and the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, Ukrainian Square is an installation designed by the Ukrainian architect Dana Kosmina and set up at the Spazio Esedra of the Giardini della Biennale.
We hope – underlined Roberto Cicutto – that this initiative will contribute to raising awareness in the world against war and all its consequences.”

COLLATERAL EVENTS
There are 30 Collateral Events admitted by the Curator and promoted by national and international non-profit bodies and institutions, organized in numerous venues of the Ci di Venezia and with a wide range of contributions and participations that enrich the pluralism of voices that characterizes the Exhibition.

INTERNATIONAL JURY and GOLDEN LIONS FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
The International Jury of the 59. International Art Exhibition , appointed by the Board of Directors of the Biennale on the proposal of the Curator Cecilia Alemani, is composed of Adrienne Edwards (USA), President of the Jury, Lorenzo Giusti (Italy), Julieta González (Mexico), Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung (Cameroon), Susanne Pfeffer (Germany).
The Jury will award the following official prizes: Golden Lion for the best National Participation; Golden Lion for the best participant of the International Exhibition; Silver Lion for a promising young participant of the International Exhibition.
The Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement of the 59. International Art Exhibition will be presented to the German artist Katharina Fritsch and the Chilean artist Cecilia Vicuña on the occasion of the award ceremony and inauguration of the Biennale Arte 2022, which will be held on Saturday 23 April 2022 at Ca’ Giustinian, home of the Venice Biennale.
