
Through the systematic use of banknotes in his works, he probes the delicate relationship between society-economy individual-money, as a “message” of a contemporary malaise
“Several years ago I chose the stage name Peter Hide 311065 (my name is Franco Crugnola) deriving it from the oxymoron between Peter pan (a well-known eternal good child) and mr. Hyde (the brutal and “bad” part of Dr. Jekyll). the two names have the same notoriety and represent the first good, innocence, purity and beauty, the second evil, bloody and brute force. as in R. Stevenson’s novel where the unequal struggle that opposes good and evil between Jekyll and Hyde, brings into play themes of great suggestion, metamorphosis and the double, the mirror and the double, to the point of touching the most secret and unconfessed strings of the human soul, so in my works I try to recreate the evil that can overpower us through a cheerful and light-hearted image”.
Peter Hide 311065 places money at the center of his artistic research, the absolute symbol of power, accumulates it, crumples it, puts it in a display case, transforming it into a real relic. His works are real “reliquaries” in which money is transformed into a commercial product, there is nothing divine but only apparent human weakness. A humanity obsessed with money, which is attracted by its attractive force and is fascinated by it.
Through his way of making art, he tries to represent through images that are part of our daily life, and apparently conciliatory, the opposites that they themselves represent, and to open in the mind of the viewer who wants to deepen the reading, an imaginary door to the danger of the overpowering of the ephemeral.
In a contemporary society, where the unit of measurement is represented by money, and where one often has the feeling that not only the material is subjugated by it, but also the immaterial, the most unique part that distinguishes the individual, money, has for the artist the symbolic value of representing the danger of a vast cultural decadence, and on the contrary the degradation that its lack produces.
The goal is not to graphically represent poverty, physical or psychological violence, environmental degradation, but not even the beauty generated solely and solely by the manipulation of wealth, the feeling of almost divine power and the dream of happiness, but to make us reflect on what generates what we all strive for, live and sometimes die for: money.
