Silvia Cassetta’s upcoming book, DanzaèArchitettura®, represents a fascinating exploration of the relationship between dance and architecture, two seemingly distinct disciplines, yet in this work, they are integrated and placed in dialogue. The project, initially developed as a thesis and later expanded into a book, examines how architecture can serve as a matrix for choreographic gestures, and how dance can interpret and transform architectural spaces.
Silvia Cassetta, a designer and architect with a deep connection to the world of dance, presents an innovative work that aims to establish a new discipline born from the meeting of her two passions. The book focuses on the idea that dance, not only as a movement of the body in space but also as a reading of space itself, can be used to understand and reveal new spatial dynamics. On the other hand, architecture is not seen merely as the construction of physical spaces but as an art form that, in synergy with bodily movement, can become a tool for emotional and poetic expression.
The introduction to the text poses a key question: Can dance be considered architecture in motion, and conversely, can architecture generate choreographic movements? The author proposes an affirmative answer, demonstrating how the dancing body can bring about an active dialogue with built space. Through a series of historical and artistic examples, Silvia Cassetta highlights the connections between the two disciplines and, with the aid of theoretical and practical references, supports the possibility of their integration.
One of the central aspects of her research concerns the MAXXI Museum in Rome, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, which becomes the perfect context for Cassetta’s choreographic experimentation. The museum, with its curves, diagonals, and fluid surfaces, evokes movement and offers fertile ground for the act of dancing. The choreographer uses the body as a tool to read the space, creating a continuous dialogue between movement and architecture. In this experimentation, light plays a fundamental role: an architectural laser is used as a choreographic tool, highlighting spaces and surfaces, and giving the body new direction and depth.
Cassetta’s reflection is enriched by the analysis of artists and architects who, before her, explored the relationship between movement and space. Among them are the works of contemporary choreographers like Merce Cunningham and Sasha Waltz, who contributed to freeing dance from conventional theatrical spaces, bringing it into urban and architectural contexts.
The book is not just a theoretical exercise but also an invitation to explore new ways of perceiving space and the body. In an era where artistic disciplines tend to merge and engage in dialogue, DanzaèArchitettura® offers an innovative and bold contribution, proposing a trans-discipline that responds to the contemporary challenges of artistic creation.
Ultimately, this text, published by Liberedizioni, presents itself as a manifesto for a new art form, capable of combining the solidity of architecture with the lightness and dynamism of dance, offering a broader and more integrated vision of the sensory and aesthetic world.
