Nettle rugs by Eileen Gray: sustainable art and avant-garde design

ClassiCon presents the collection of plant rugs inspired by the works of the famous Irish designer

Sustainability in the world of interior design finds a new expression with nettle rugs by Eileen Gray. ClassiCon, a historic design furniture company, offers a plant-based version of the Irish designer’s iconic textile works, reinterpreting the charm of her avant-garde designs in an ecological way.
These handcrafted rugs are made from Himalayan nettle fibers, a renewable raw material that offers slightly iridescent color effects and a unique silky sheen . The natural variation in the absorption capacity of the fibers gives each rug an original and unique character, making it a true piece of textile art.
Production takes place in Nepal, where nettles grow wild and without pesticides. After manual harvesting of the stems, the fibers are washed in spring water, softened, dried and lightened with white clay before being spun and dyed with ecological dyes certified OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100. The use of the traditional Tibetan knotting technique guarantees a soft and harmonious result, with a density of about 124,000 knots per square meter.

Each ClassiCon rug is made in collaboration with M2R and STEP certified, attesting to ethical production, respect for workers’ rights and the absence of child labor. The collection includes 13 rugs inspired by Gray’s gouaches , including the Faubourg, Cassis and De Stijl models, each available in two sizes.
The project is a tribute to the non-conformist creativity of Eileen Gray, who throughout her career has fused art and modern design with an innovative approach. ClassiCon, founded in 1990 in Munich, continues to enhance classic and contemporary design, also collaborating with designers such as Konstantin Grcic, Sebastian Herkner and Victoria Wilmotte, combining tradition and innovation.
Choosing a nettle rug means embracing sustainable design, contributing to eco-friendly décor without sacrificing sophisticated aesthetics and luxury craftsmanship. Thanks to the combination of textile innovation, natural materials and responsible production, these rugs represent the perfect balance between art, functionality and respect for the environment.
Eileen Gray’s nettle rugs are more than a piece of furniture: they are a symbol of conscious design, where aesthetic beauty is combined with environmental responsibility, offering a unique experience for those who love to furnish their home with style and sustainability.
