TRUNK(HOUSE) is a new concept of immersive hospitality, purely local, developed by the TRUNK(HOTEL) team and located in a historic building – a former geisha house – in the Kagurazaka district of Tokyo (Japan’s historic district also known as “Tokyo’s little Kyoto“).
The one-bedroom property offers up to four guests for the night (or up to 30 for cocktail parties) who can stay alongside an array of artwork, specially commissioned for the space, by seven local and international artists. Works ranging from painting, sculpture, crafts, to the art of paper cutting.
TRUNK(HOUSE) was built on the model of the “Tokyo Salon”. Salons, present between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, where artists and academics used to gather to discuss and debate, until late at night, on topics that would shape the cultural landscape of the city.
Filling the space with contemporary art – and bespoke design by the likes of Stephen Kenn and Jean Prouvé – the TRUNK(HOUSE) team hopes guests will leave inspired.
Each artist has been selected based on their cultural influences and their ties to the city of Tokyo and Japan, thus creating a space that interprets contemporary Japanese culture through a local and international lens. TRUNK(HOUSE)’s art offerings are part of its effort to preserve a unique Tokyo neighborhood that is home to a thriving arts, culture, and literary scene.
About TRUNK:
TRUNK is a new generation of design hotels that opposes the concept of atypical business and luxury hotels in Tokyo (Japan), which surprisingly lacks cutting-edge boutique design hotels. The TRUNK philosophy is to ensure that guests are able to immerse themselves in Tokyo’s most vibrant neighborhoods and socialize to the fullest.
TRUNK (HOTEL) is the first structure, inaugurated in 2017. Its design is the work of acclaimed Mount Fuji Architects , and the rooms and lounge are by Jamo Associates, with a modern and pervasive design throughout the hotel. The property is located in Tokyo’s trendy Harajuku/Jingumae district and is the first property of TRUNK Co., Ltd., with plans for more hotels to come. Harajuku/Jingumae (within the Shibuya area) has a long history of growing crops from different cultures, serving as a springboard for Japanese innovation, making it the first ideal location for TRUNK.
Housed in a four-storey, basement structure, TRUNK(HOTEL) features a holistic “live, play and work” environment, where art-rich rooms and suites integrate seamlessly with public spaces, dining concepts, and a signature retail store. The hotel also has products specially made in Japan, including bath products and other items that can be purchased at the TRUNK(STORE) on the ground floor.
TRUNK(HOUSE) is the brand’s second launch, with a total of ten hotels planned in Tokyo by 2027.
