Rockwell Group redesigns the Casa Kahlo Museum: a journey into Frida’s intimate world

In Mexico City, the new installation designed by the New York studio restores life, emotion and contemporaneity to the Casa Roja, the heart of Frida Kahlo's story

There is a place, in Coyoacán, where time seems to have stopped. It is the Casa Roja, the Kahlo family residence, now transformed into a museum that tells the life of one of the most iconic artists of the twentieth century. And today, thanks to a project signed by the famous Rockwell Group, this space returns to vibrate with new light.
The new Casa Kahlo Museum is not a simple renovation: it is a sensory journey into Frida’s private and creative world. A path designed to restore his voice, his silences, his colors, through a perfect combination of design, technology and memory.

A project that combines history and innovation
Rockwell Group, in collaboration with the Fundación Kahlo, has rethought the spaces of the museum with a respectful and poetic approach. The goal was not only to preserve, but to reactivate the soul of the house: to transform it into a living place, capable of telling not only the artist, but also the woman Frida was.
The architects worked on three key areas: the reception, the garden and the lower floor. The result is a subtle balance between authenticity and innovation. The domestic atmosphere remains intact, but comes to life through new paths, interactive installations and details that evoke Frida’s everyday life: her palette, her books, the small objects she loved to collect.

The garden: a heart that beats with memory
As soon as you cross the threshold, you enter the courtyard, the beating heart of the Casa Roja. Here, Rockwell Group has unearthed the historic curved staircase on which the Kahlo family loved to be photographed, and recreated the convivial atmosphere of Mexican homes of the last century.
In the center of the garden grows a grapefruit, the same one that Frida depicted in one of her murals, planted in a large hand-carved stone pot. All around, ceramics from Oaxaca and Guadalajara recall the craftsmanship and richness of Mexican culture, which was an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Frida.

The secret studio: where the magic
is bornGoing down to the basement, you discover an extraordinary place: Frida’s private studio, never before open to the public. It is a cozy and poetic space, where the artist painted, wrote and observed nature. Here, design meets technology: an interactive installation created by the Rockwell Group LAB allows visitors to digitally explore the insects and plants that Frida studied, as if her scientific and creative spirit were still present.

A tribute to creative freedom
The new Casa Kahlo Museum is an act of love. Every detail, from the materials chosen to the natural light that crosses the rooms, restores the vital force and sensitivity of an artist who has made fragility a universal language.
As David Rockwell, founder of the studio, says: “We wanted each space to tell the story of Frida not only as an icon, but as a person. Design, here, becomes a story and memory.”
With this project, Rockwell Group signs not only a museum, but an experience: a place where the past dialogues with the present, and where beauty becomes a way to remember, understand and continue to dream.
