Florence Biennale 2025: the excellence of contemporary art in the heart of Florence

An international event that combines creativity, innovation and dialogue between cultures at the Fortezza da Basso

For almost thirty years, the Florence Biennale has been one of the most prestigious and recognized events in the world dedicated to contemporary art and design. Founded in 1997 by the brothers Pasquale and Piero Celona, the exhibition takes place every two years in the evocative setting of the Fortezza da Basso in Florence, a symbolic place of the history and culture of the Renaissance city. Over the course of its editions, the Biennale has welcomed thousands of artists from all over the world, becoming an essential point of reference for those who want to understand the evolution of contemporary artistic language and the increasingly close connections between art, society and technology.
The mission of the Florence Biennale has been clear since its origins: to offer an independent and free platform, where artistic quality prevails over commercial logic. It is not an art fair, but a large cultural space open to dialogue and experimentation, in which diversities meet and are valued. The goal is to encourage an authentic comparison between cultures, styles and disciplines, helping to build a universal language capable of overcoming geographical and ideological barriers.
Each edition of the Biennale revolves around a guiding theme that inspires the works and collateral activities. The 2025 edition, scheduled from 18 to 26 October at the Fortezza da Basso, will have as its main theme “The Sublime Essence of Light and Darkness. Concepts of Dualism and Unity in Contemporary Art and Design”. The theme explores the relationship between light and darkness, between opposites that attract and complement each other, inviting artists and visitors to reflect on the dualities of contemporary life: technology and nature, individual and collective, material and spiritual.

The event covers over 11,000 square meters of exhibition space, with more than 500 international artists and designers from around 80 countries. Over 1,500 works including painting, sculpture, photography, installations, video art, performance and new media will be presented on display. The Biennale is not just a place for exhibition, but a true laboratory of ideas where art, science, philosophy and sustainability meet. The public will be able to participate in workshops, conferences, round tables and live performances, experiences that enrich the dialogue between creatives, scholars and enthusiasts.
One of the most anticipated moments is the award ceremony of the “Lorenzo il Magnifico” Award, which celebrates artistic excellence in different categories and recognizes the value of those who, through their work, contribute to the development of contemporary art and design. In addition to individual awards, a lifetime achievement award is also awarded, intended for personalities who have left a profound mark on the international artistic scene.
The Florence Biennale also stands out for the prestige of its institutional patronages, which include UNESCO, the European Parliament, the Italian Ministry of Culture, the Tuscany Region and the Municipality of Florence. This broad support testifies to its central role in promoting culture and spreading the universal values of art.
Participating in the Florence Biennale means living an immersive experience that combines past and future, tradition and innovation. It is a unique opportunity to admire new artistic trends, discover emerging talents and closely observe the work of established artists in an international context of the highest level. For artists it is a prestigious showcase capable of opening up new professional opportunities; for visitors, it is an immersive journey into the world of contemporary art, in the heart of the city symbol of the Renaissance.
The fifteenth edition of the Florence Biennale promises to be an unmissable event for those who love art and culture in all their forms.
