Architectural regeneration in Belgravia: two townhouses become a contemporary luxury residence

A project that combines history, natural light and contemporary design in the heart of London

In the heart of Belgravia, one of London’s most exclusive districts, an extraordinary architectural redevelopment project by Tiam Architects comes to life. The intervention has transformed two nineteenth-century townhouses into a single elegant, bright and perfectly functional family home, demonstrating how the combination of history and modernity can generate results of great impact.
The project stems from the need of a young London family to create a large and coherent house, overcoming the critical issues typical of period homes: fragmented spaces, poor lighting and poorly functional layouts. Thanks to an approach based on contemporary architectural design, the architects were able to enhance the original elements, such as cornices, fireplaces and sash windows, transforming them into the protagonists of the new design.
One of the most innovative aspects concerns the use of natural light. Through the strategic insertion of skylights and vertical openings, the project significantly improves the natural lighting of the interiors, bringing light even to the previously dark and unused lower levels. The basement has been converted into a large open space with kitchen and living area, directly connected to a green terrace.

From an aesthetic point of view, the choice of materials plays a fundamental role. The use of limestone, natural wood and lime plaster helps to create a refined and timeless environment, perfectly in line with luxury interior design trends. The spaces have been simplified and made more fluid, favoring a perception of continuity and harmony.
Particular attention has also been paid to the sleeping area, where each room has been designed to ensure comfort and privacy. The bedrooms, equipped with private bathrooms, represent an example of modern residential design capable of respecting the original structure without sacrificing functionality.
Another key element of the project is compliance with urban planning regulations and historical constraints. Operating in a restricted area such as Belgravia requires specific skills in conservative restoration and a deep knowledge of the architectural context. Tiam Architects has been able to integrate new solutions without altering the historical identity of the buildings.
The end result is a home that combines elegance, comfort and innovation, perfectly embodying the concept of sustainable and context-sensitive architecture. With a 70% increase in living space, obtained in full compliance with regulations, the project represents a virtuous example of urban transformation.
In conclusion, this intervention demonstrates how a careful and creative design vision can revolutionize existing spaces, giving new life to historic buildings and responding to the needs of contemporary living.
