The mirror is a “home” object, which is part of our daily life, of our routines. We look in the mirror in the morning before going out to check our image and we look in the mirror in the evening, before going to sleep, after finishing all our activities. Since ancient times, seeing one’s own reflection has been an activity of great fascination for men, even when mirrors as we know them today did not exist, but one had to settle for a puddle of water or a metal plate.
Even if it is now a “home” object, this does not mean that it is a trivial object: on the contrary, the mirror can be used as an important piece of furniture in our homes. In fact, if this object was born as a functional element to look at oneself and often finds its natural place in environments such as the bedroom or the bathroom, the mirror can also be used as an important decorative element, to transform a room and give it a particular character.
Different mirrors for different rooms
In a confined or dimly lit environment, a mirror can help amplify spaces and light. This is the case, for example, of the bathroom area or the entrance which, especially in modern homes, is an area that is often reduced to a minimum. In this case, placing a decorative mirror in a small passage area will help to optically enlarge the space and will act as a business card for our guests. In a small bathroom, a well-placed mirror, for example on the entire wall above the washbasin area, will serve to significantly increase the sense of depth. In these cases, in order not to risk weighing down already confined rooms, it would be more appropriate to choose mirrors without a frame or with an inconspicuous frame.
A mirror can also be used on the contrary to enhance large and spacious walls, enriching the environment with different aesthetic effects. We can even place several mirrors of various sizes, to give a dynamic and creative effect, suitable for contemporary style homes. In this case, however, the green light is also given to mirrors with important and particular frames, which will fit into the wall like a real work of art.
Decorating with reflections
We can also take advantage of the characteristics of the mirror, i.e. its ability to reflect, to bring a part of the external landscape into the house. A mirror placed in front of a window overlooking a beautiful panorama can allow you to reflect part of the landscape inside our home, thus helping to furnish the environment both with the object itself and with the reflected subject.
Mirrors can also be used more simply to reflect natural light into the surrounding environment, placing them in such a way as to direct the light coming from an external source (a dormer, a skylight, …) towards an environment without natural sources of lighting.
In conclusion, we can therefore say that the mirror is not such a trivial object, but rather offers multiple possibilities of use to tastefully furnish our home. We just have to choose the one that best suits our environment!
