Design Miami/Basel returns in September with the gallery’s international lineup and new hybrid exhibition format

Basel returns to being the stage of design with its fifteenth edition

Design Miami/Basel returns to Basel’s Messeplatz for the fifteenth edition of the fair from 21 to 26 September 2021. The 2021 fair marks a strong comeback with 27 international gallery presentations and 14 Curio exhibitions, as well as a reimagined “Design at Large” program with large-scale works and installations.
The next edition will also introduce the hybrid physical/digital event format for the fair first unveiled in Miami in 2020, this will allow collectors to view and purchase works from the show floor directly online and engage in digital programming including virtual tours, talks and more.
In an international premiere, Superblue will also partner with Design Miami/ to present Shylights by DRIFT, the Dutch artist duo Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta. The installation, which will occupy the 2500 square meters of Event Hall 1.0, will be the first international presentation of Superblue, the new company dedicated to producing, presenting and engaging the public with experiential art, which opened its first center in Miami in May 2021. Shylights is an upside-down poetic forest of moving flowers that evokes the impermanence of nature and the sense of wonder that comes from being immersed in it. The flowers mimic the process of “nictinasty,” the cyclical movement of plants in response to the arrival of dusk or dawn.

“Design Miami/ is looking forward to reuniting in person in Basel, while bringing the best parts
of our trade fairs to a wider audience through our new hybrid format. We are pleased to offer an advanced online event and shopping experience for the Basel edition through our expanded digital platform: designmiami.com. The galleries and partners that make Design Miami/ so great are already getting us excited with what they’ve planned for September, and we can’t wait to reveal more details in the coming months.”  said Jennifer Roberts, CEO of Design Miami/.

The theme of this new edition will be “Human Nature”, where the increasingly evolving relationship between human beings and the natural world will be examined. The dichotomy between humans and nature, once considered distinct, conflicting, or in harmony, has collapsed. Aric Chen, Curatorial Director, asks us to examine what role design could play in responding to this new reality. How could we look to both the past and the future to rethink the interactions between man, nature and human nature?

“Design Miami has always been the global forum for design, and as the Basel fair returns this year, we hope that Human Nature will continue to spark lively discussion through our talks and programming, while offering another lens to look at the work of our galleries and designers.”
