Art Basel 2025: the fair that shapes the face of contemporary art

Between new market trends, monumental installations and a strong focus on accessibility, Basel confirms itself as the global capital of art

From 19 to 22 June 2025, the prestigious edition of Art Basel took place at Messe Basel in Switzerland, once again confirming itself as the reference modern and contemporary art fair for the global market. This year, the event attracted 289 galleries from 42 countries, presenting works by over 4,000 artists.
A distinctive element of this edition was the growing focus on the mid-priced segment, with galleries oriented towards works of medium accessibility, in response to a decline in sales in the ultra-premium range (over $10 million). According to UBS, global art sales fell by 12% in the previous year, with a 39% reduction in high-end. To date, there are still no sales above 10 million, a sign of the more conservative trend of the market.

Sectors and novelties: a wide and stratified
offer
Art Basel has confirmed its structure divided into thematic sectors: Galleries, Premiere, Statements, Kabinett and Unlimited. The recently introduced Premiere sector highlights works created in the last 5 years, in particular by artists in mid-career but with institutional relevance. The Unlimited program, on the other hand, allows the presentation of monumental installations, sculptures and immersive performances.
Another modern initiative is Parcours, which transforms the city of Basel into an open-air gallery with site-specific works positioned along urban routes and historical sites.

Local and international
impact
During the fair, Basel is transformed into a global cultural hub, with satellite events such as Liste Art Fair, Volta Basel and Photo Basel, complementing the curatorial experience with proposals in official spaces and off-spaces in the city. Markus Rosemarie Schwarzwälder highlighted the vibrant initiative of artistic urban mapping, including Katharina Grosse’s large interventions on Messeplatz, which animated the city just before the opening.

A barometer of contemporary
art
Art Basel 2025 confirms itself as a thermometer of the health of the global market, measuring the state of sales and artistic offer. Despite an uncertain economic climate, the event continues to focus on a mix of accessible works and experimental content, maintaining an attractive force for collectors, curators and professionals.
With the confirmation of new spaces such as Premiere and the emergence of innovative exhibition policies, Art Basel remains a dynamic and inclusive reality, capable of responding to global challenges and catalyzing the world’s attention on contemporary art.
