The Sacco armchair by Zanotta: the icon of Italian design that has changed the way we sit

From 1968 to today, a symbol of creative freedom, innovation and timeless style

Nova Milanese, September 2025 – When in 1968 Piero Gatti, Cesare Paolini and Franco Teodoro presented Zanotta with the idea of a seat without a rigid structure, no one could have imagined that that intuition would revolutionize the world of furniture. Thus was born Sacco, the armchair that gave rise to the very concept of bean bag and which, more than fifty years later, continues to represent one of the most famous and recognizable icons of Italian design in the world.
Produced exclusively by Zanotta, Sacco is the emblem of intelligent simplicity: an informal seat, capable of adapting perfectly to the body thanks to its interior composed of high-strength expanded polystyrene spheres. The absence of a predefined shape allows the armchair to transform depending on who uses it, offering immediate and personalized comfort. It is precisely this freedom of use that has made Sacco a transversal object, loved by different generations and present both in domestic environments and in creative and cultural contexts.

Despite its radical spirit, Sacco has remained surprisingly faithful to the original project. Zanotta has chosen not to alter the concept, intervening over time only on materials and coverings to meet the needs of contemporary living. The latest evolution is represented by the new Tux upholstery, presented during Milan Design Week 2025: an innovative fabric in cotton and polyurethane, characterized by a palette of bright colors that reinforces the pop and contemporary character of the armchair.
Alongside Tux, the collection also offers the VIP upholstery, ideal for outdoor use, and the elegant leather version, designed for more sophisticated environments. Available in three sizes (54×59 cm, 68×63 cm and 80×68 cm), Sacco is confirmed as an extremely versatile seat, capable of fitting naturally into any space. Its iconic strength is also demonstrated by collaborations with design-like worlds, such as the one with Bottega Veneta for The Ark collection, presented during the SS25 fashion show at Milan Fashion Week.
In 2020 Sacco received the ADI Compasso d’Oro for lifetime achievement of the product, an award that establishes its cultural as well as design value. Today, as then, this armchair continues to embody the most authentic spirit of Italian design: free, visionary and timeless. A symbol that confirms Zanotta as the custodian of a unique creative heritage, capable of crossing eras and trends without ever losing its identity.
