Art Basel Qatar: the new frontier of contemporary art in Doha

An international event that brings global artistic dialogue to the heart of the Middle East

Art Basel Qatar represents one of the most ambitious projects in the international contemporary art scene. For the first time in its history, the famous art fair network Art Basel has decided to expand into the Middle East, choosing Doha, the capital of Qatar, as the venue for the inaugural edition to be held from 5 to 7 February 2026 with preview days on 3 and 4 February.
This event is the result of a great collaboration between Art Basel, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and the creative collective QC+, with the aim of creating a cultural platform capable of promoting artistic exchange between different cultures and strengthening the art scene in the region.
The fair will take place mainly in two iconic venues of Msheireb Downtown Doha: the M7 creative hub and the Doha Design District, two symbolic places of Doha’s cultural and urban transformation. Here exhibition spaces, creative workshops and environments that foster the connection between local and international artists are gathered.
A distinctive element of Art Basel Qatar is its curated and thematic format, which breaks with the traditional model of exhibition stands. The artistic direction is entrusted to the Egyptian-born artist Wael Shawky, who has chosen the theme “Becoming as a common thread, exploring concepts of transformation, identity and paths of change in the contemporary world.

For the first edition, 87 galleries from 31 countries have been invited, presenting 84 international artists participating with individual or unpublished projects. The strong presence of artists from the MENASA region (Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) confirms the event’s desire to act as a cultural bridge between East and West, enhancing emerging and established talents.
In addition to gallery presentations, Art Basel Qatar offers a rich program of Special Projects that includes installations, performances and site-specific works in the main public spaces of the city center. These projects expand the dialogue between art and community, transforming the trade fair experience into an immersive narrative journey.
The choice of Doha is not accidental: in recent years, Qatar has invested heavily in culture, building museums, research centers and educational programs dedicated to art and creativity, under the leadership of key figures such as Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The new fair fits perfectly into this strategic vision of cultural development, positioning Doha as an international hub for contemporary art.
Art Basel Qatar is not just an exhibition event, but a dynamic platform intended to redefine the role of art fairs in the world and create new opportunities for artists, collectors and global audiences.
