How to make your home safer with armored shutters

Below is a brief guide on buying and how to best combine aesthetics and safety

If you need to increase the security of your home, perhaps because you live on street level and have windows or French windows that could be exploited by criminals to gain access to your home, know that there is a solution to the problem.
In reality, there could be two solutions, but in this article we will focus on the choice that probably best combines aesthetics and security: the installation of armored shutters.
Armoured shutters represent a real physical barrier to entry into the house and are an excellent solution because they meet both security and aesthetic and decorative needs, thus not changing the façade of the house with grilles or grilles.
If the structure of the house allows it, they can also be installed to replace roller shutters, which are certainly a less effective system from the point of view of protection.

Technical characteristics of armoured shutters
Armoured shutters are particularly reinforced, solid and very robust fixtures. They are usually produced in iron or steel, materials that are already very resistant by their nature, and are obviously designed to resist burglary and break-in attempts.
Like other security structures (e.g. security doors), shutters are also characterized by belonging to an anti-burglary security class. The level starts from 1 to go up to 6, but classes 5 and 6 are used exclusively for commercial activities or companies, so for private use on the market you can generally choose between class 3 or 4 armored shutters. At the time of purchase, it is therefore necessary to check that the product has all the certifications in order.
It is also important to check the quality of the hinges, which are often the first element attacked in theft attempts and must therefore guarantee resistance to cuts and burglary. The same goes for iron rods, which must prevent the slats from slipping out during a break-in attempt. Last but not least, the lock must also be checked, which must be made of stainless steel and with multiple locking points, again to increase the level of security.
Compared to other protection systems, such as alarms, armored shutters have the advantage of being clearly visible, thus constituting an optimal deterrent from the start for any ill-intentioned people, who could discard your home a priori just at the sight of this type of window.

Design and safety
Once the technical characteristics required of the product to solve the needs of individual situations have been identified, it is possible to dwell on some “details” that can be considered more aesthetic.
First of all, the type of opening must be chosen: in fact, there are security shutters with folding opening (the most used), folding or even sliding on rails. To secure the window, a single sash may be sufficient (if the opening to be covered is small) or a multi-sash shutter will be needed.
The louver slats can then be fixed or movable. In this second case, it will be possible to decide how much light to filter inside the house, until complete darkness is obtained. A not insignificant detail, taking into account that this system can also contribute to the heating/cooling of the house during the various seasons.
The presence of anti-noise seals positioned on the perimeter of the doors can also be useful, for example if the house is located in a busy area.
On an aesthetic level, armored shutters are only often galvanized, to prevent the formation of rust, and painted with special products, with the possibility of choosing from numerous colors, if not even ordering them with RAL colors.

To conclude this brief guide to the purchase of armored shutters, it is necessary to mention an important incentive that currently allows you to save on the actual purchase cost. In fact, the “Renovation Bonus” is still in force, which allows you to deduct 50% of the expenses incurred for the purchase and replacement of security shutters and railings, up to a maximum of 96,000 euros per single property unit.
So if you have this expense planned, it is worth taking advantage of it before the situation changes.
