Rail Baltica is a project of enormous proportions and extremely ambitious for central and northern Europe: it is in fact a railway infrastructure with the aim of connecting Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland by land.
The aim of the project is to offer a transport service not only for passengers but also for freight, thus improving rail connections between central and northern Europe. Obviously, advantages and economic interests were carefully behind the plan and nothing was left to chance.
The new stations
At the same time as the construction of the rail network, Rail Baltica’s programme includes the construction of seven passenger stations, three multimodal freight yards and a large number of connections with ports and airports, so as to extend the network as much as possible.
The symbolic value of the project is fundamental, which embodies the idea of new transport in the Baltic area, an innovative conception from an architectural and urban point of view.
The stations built in the capitals will be great from an architectural point of view, with a futuristic design worthy of the best online game. In fact, since it is a plan intended for several nations, numerous studies are being carried out to find a design that is able, on the one hand, to underline the particularities of the specific country, and on the other to highlight the common aspects of the 5 states.
An impressive project
The importance of the project is undoubted, and it is so wide in economic and symbolic terms that it has made the competitions for the stations an opportunity for innovation from an architectural point of view. As evidence of this, two competitions were awarded to Zaha Hadid Architects, a studio that deals with design and architecture in 55 countries.
Rail Baltica will be connected with the multimodal transport systems of all the countries involved, so as to allow a rapid transit of goods, which will pass from one transport system to another with a view to environmental sustainability.
The end of the project is scheduled for 2026, for what, at least for the Baltic area, is an unprecedented project.
