Monkey Business: la scultura di Daniele Basso che riflette sul rapporto tra uomo e intelligenza artificiale

A contemporary work that explores the link between technology, humanity and the future, focusing on the role of man in the era of digital innovation

In the panorama of Italian contemporary art , a new and powerful reflection on the relationship between man and technology is taking shape. With the sculpture Monkey Business, the artist Daniele Basso proposes an intense and provocative vision of the future of humanity in the age of artificial intelligence, addressing central themes such as human responsibility, innovation and the relationship between technological progress and cultural values.
Created for SA Servizi Associati S.p.A., the work was born as an artistic project capable of questioning the present and stimulating a reflection on the role of the human being in a world increasingly dominated by technology. Through the language of contemporary sculpture, Basso invites the public to question what direction society is taking and how man can maintain a central role in the era of technological innovation.
The title itself, deliberately provocative, suggests the risk of facing major changes superficially. As the artist explains, when a new technology emerges and spreads rapidly, one is often not fully aware of the risks and consequences. It is precisely in this area of uncertainty that the reflection of the work is placed, which becomes a metaphor for the delicate balance between progress and awareness in the context of the man-machine relationship.
The conceptual inspiration of the sculpture comes from the famous opening scene of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, a masterpiece by director Stanley Kubrick. In that sequence, the mysterious monolith represents the unknown and the evolutionary leap of humanity. In Basso’s project, this image is reinterpreted in the light of the digital revolution and the advent of art and technology, suggesting that today humanity is once again facing a turning point.

The sculpture symbolically represents this moment of transition: some monkeys – a metaphor for human evolution – climb the monolith and try to dominate it. In this vision, technology and artificial intelligence become very powerful tools that amplify human capabilities, but at the same time involve an increasing delegation of responsibility to machines. This scenario raises fundamental questions about the loss of control and the need to maintain an ethical approach in the development of technology and society.
According to Basso, however, what makes the human experience truly unique is not perfection, but imperfection. It is precisely mistakes, flaws and difficulties that generate creativity, empathy and personal growth. In a world dominated by algorithms and performance, remembering the value of imperfection becomes an essential element to preserve the identity of man within Italian contemporary art and contemporary culture.
For SA Servizi Associati S.p.A., the project also represents an important declaration of intent: to put culture and artistic sensitivity at the center of innovation processes. Art, in fact, becomes a tool to reflect on the future and to maintain a strong link with fundamental values such as well-being, beauty and humanism, indispensable elements in a society increasingly oriented towards performance and speed.
In this sense, Monkey Business is part of the broader debate on the future of art and artificial intelligence, inviting the public not to lose sight of the active role of the human being. Even in the face of the most advanced technologies, man must remain a protagonist in designing and imagining the future.
The work thus becomes a powerful metaphor for our time and a reflection on contemporary sculpture as a tool for critical thinking: an invitation to look at technology not as an inevitable destiny, but as a tool to be guided with awareness.
